In the Mets’ pursuit of an upgrade at designated hitter, the team is in active conversations with Pittsburgh about Daniel Vogelbach, according to league sources.
Vogelbach, a left-handed hitter, has an .817 career OPS against righty pitching and a .489 OPS against lefties. He could be part of a DH platoon, replacing Dom Smith. The Mets are working to trade Smith, and would also move J.D. Davis.
The Mets’ interest in Vogelbach was first reported by Michael Mayer of the website Metsmerized. A deal is not done, and it might not get done, but Vogelbach is in play for the Mets.
The Mets are also interested in Colorado’s C.J. Cron, a righty with less severe platoon splits; switch-hitter Josh Bell; and righty Nelson Cruz. The Mets have also been talking with Baltimore about Trey Mancini, as previously reported
Bell and Cruz are with division rival Washington. The Mets still have a chance to get Bell, per sources, because he is a rental, but the Nats don’t ever love the idea of helping them. Cruz is in play but isn’t the Mets’ first choice.
Additionally, the Mets are interested in a number of players that little old Andy Martino hasn’t found out about.
