Four takeaways from Wednesday's game
1) Syndergaard was not as sharp as he would have liked, walking five batters (one intentionally) over seven innings pitched, the most he's issued in a start this season. He did finish the outing strong, however, holding the Padres scoreless over his final four innings. In total, the right-hander allowed four runs (three earned) and eight hits while striking out eight Padres hitters.
2) Dom Smith had an adventurous game in left field, beginning with a pair of errors in the third inning. With the Padres leading 2-1 and Manny Machado on second, Hunter Renfroe singled to left. Smith was looking to come up throwing, but took his eye of the ball, which went underneath his glove and allowed Machado to score and Renfroe to coast into second. Later in the inning, Franmil Reyes doubled down the line to score Renfroe. Smith's throw back into the infield was well wide of its target and allowed Reyes to hustle to third, though he'd be stranded there to end the inning. Smith also misjudged a shallow flyball that ended up dropping in front of him in the eighth.
3) Jeff McNeil and Michael Conforto did their jobs at the top of the order, combining for three hits, but the rest of the Mets lineup added just two more and was generally stymied by the Padres pitching staff. McNeil doubled to lead off the first and Conforto singled him in for the opening run of the game. Conforto, however, did strike out to leave the bases loaded in the seventh with the Mets trailing 4-2.
4) Jeurys Familia was unable to keep the deficit to two when he entered the game in the top of the 8th, allowing all three batters he faced to reach. Reyes singled and was replaced on the bases by Wil Myers, who was called out after over-sliding second base attempting a steal. It gave Familia a fresh start, but he walked Luis Urias, who scored on an Austin Hedges double to knock Familia out of the game. He was charged with a second run after Luis Avilan came on and allowed Hedges to score on a Francisco Mejia bloop single.
