Five things to know from Wednesday's game
1) Fresh off the heels of three straight multi-hit games, McNeil got the Mets' started with a bang on Wednesday night, depositing the first pitch of the game from Domingo German into the bullpen to put the Mets on the board. McNeil still leads the Major Leagues with his .349 batting average after one more hit on Wednesday.
2) Jason Vargas didn't have his best outing for the Mets, but he did keep them in the game. The lefty went 5.1 innings, allowing three earned runs. He got into trouble early, allowing an RBI double to Aaron Judge and an RBI single to Gleyber Torres in the first inning, but he settled down after that. He was pulled from the game in the sixth inning after allowing a solo home run to Didi Gregorius.
3) After four straight multi-hit games, Robinson Cano was moved back up to the three-spot in the order on Wednesday, but the move didn't pay off. Cano went 0-4 with a strikeout on the night.
4) After Vargas left the game, Mickey Callaway turned the ball over to Wilmer Font. The righty gave the Mets four outs, but also surrendered two runs on three hits, including a solo home run to Gio Urshela, the first batter he faced.
5) Steven Matz made his debut out of the bullpen for the Mets on Wednesday. Matz entered the game with two away in the top of the seventh, and forced a Gregorius ground out to end the frame. Matz faced just one batter, as he was later pulled for a pinch hitter. Callaway said earlier this week that Matz will pitch out of the pen until at least the All-Star break.

The Mets are off on Thursday before welcoming the Phillies to Citi Field for a three-game set this weekend. The Mets will send Jacob deGrom (4-7, 3.32 ERA) to the mound against Phillies righty Vince Velasquez (2-5, 4.73 ERA).
