Five things to know about Sunday's game
1) Adeiny Hechavarria played the part of hero once again during his short tenure with the Mets, with his second three-run homer over the right-field fence this week. This one came off Tigers starter Spencer Turnbull, who ultimately took the loss, as part of the Mets' four-run fourth inning that accounted for all of their runs. And this time, the dinger held up and the Mets held on to win. Hechavarrria is hitting .188 with the Mets.
2) Zack Wheeler turned in his longest start of the season. Nicholas Castellanos took him deep in the first inning to put the Mets behind 1-0 early and he pounded a two-run single the other way two innings later, but he was solid other than that. The right-hander fanned eight over 7 1/3 innings and allowed five hits plus a walk. Wheeler threw 102 pitches -- 75 strikes. At one point, Wheeler retired 13 consecutive Tigers.
3) The first chip in the Mets' comeback was cashed in by Todd Frazier. The heady veteran saw the right side of the infield open against him with runners on the corners in the fourth and took advantage by pushing a hard bunt that got through the infield and scored a run to set up first and third once again. That's when Hechavarrira came up and did his damage to give the Mets a lead they wouldn't give back.
4) Carlos Gomez has already had a few big hits since rejoining the Mets, but he proved what he could do with his glove Sunday. Making his first start of the season in left field, Gomez somehow kept a sinking liner from Dawel Lugo from hitting the ground with a stellar diving catch. He also stole a base.
5) Wheeler departed with two runners on and one out in the eighth when manager Mickey Callaway turned to the embattled Jeurys Familia to keep the Mets on top. The setup man did just that, striking out both batters he faced. Edwin Diaz walked the leadoff batter and allowed a single to set up runners on first and third with one out, but wiggled out of the jam to convert his 13th save of the season.
