The Mets couldn't even the four-game series with the Cardinals, falling late to St. Louis, 4-3, at Citi Field on Father's Day Sunday. >> Box score
Six things to know from Sunday's game...
1) Jason Vargas started this one looking to continue his hot stretch. And though he was pitching pretty decent, a lefty calf cramp forced him to leave the game after four innings. Overall, he allowed three runs (two earned) on just one hit -- a two-run homer by Paul Goldschmidt -- and three walks. He also struck out four over his 72-pitch outing.
2) After Vargas came out, Wilmer Font was solid with three scoreless frames. But Chris Flexen broke that streak, allowing a homer to Paul DeJong to break the 3-3 tie in the top of the eighth.
3) Dom Smith continues to see success at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double in his first at-bat tha eventually resulted in him coming around to score. Smith is hitting .348 on the season.
4) Robinson Cano returned to the lineup, and he laced a double for his only hit on the day. The Mets could've used him with runners on the corners and one out in the bottom of the fifth. But he grounded into a double play to end the inning and keep the game tied.
5) Brooks Pounders made his Mets debut, where allowed just one hit over a scoreless inning.
6) Juan Lagares had a much-needed multi-hit game to help raise his average to .197 on the season. He went 2-for-3 with an RBI single that tied the game for the Mets.
