The Mets' bullpen imploded Saturday night, wasting Jacob deGrom's strong start after deGrom left with an apparent injury, and they ultimately fell to the Diamondbacks in 11 innings, 6-5. >> Box score
Five things to know about Saturday's game
1) DeGrom got off to a roaring start, his nasty slider helping him get through the first five innings on just 47 pitches. He allowed two baserunners in the sixth before getting away unscathed. With two outs and a runner on second in the seventh, Adeiny Hechavarria stopped a hard grounder but the ball popped up off his glove. He decided to try to get the out at first and made an inaccurate throw, allowing Adam Jones to score.
DeGrom then got a visit from Mickey Callaway and the trainer, during which deGrom pointed to his right hip. He faced one more batter, allowing an 0-2 ground-rule double before another visit to check on him. Callaway removed deGrom from the game. He finished with one earned run allowed in 6.2 innings, giving up five hits and a walk while striking out seven. Jeurys Familia stranded the inherited runners on second and third.
2) But then, the bullpen imploded. With a 5-1 lead, Familia hit a batter to start the eighth before Jarrod Dyson's dribbler single, on which Tomás Nido made a throwing error to allow the lead runner to get to third. Nido appeared hurt but remained in the game. An RBI single and a sac fly ensued, getting the Diamondbacks to within 5-3.
Familia was removed for Robert Gsellman, who was summoned for the fourth time in five days. He promptly gave up a game-tying, two-run homer to Adam Jones. Familia was charged with three runs and now has a 6.56 ERA.
3) Drew Gagnon entered for the ninth and gave up a one-out, four-pitch walk to Tim Locastro, who stole second as Wilson Ramos, who entered in a double switch, mishandled the transfer. With two outs, Callaway strangely went to Edwin Díaz mid-inning and Locastro advance to third on a passed ball before a flyout ended the threat. Diaz then struck out the side in the 10th.
Tyler Bashlor came in for the 11th and gave up a leadoff double to Kevin Cron, who with one out was driven in by Locastro to end the game.
4) Pete Alonso got things started offensively for the Mets in the first inning, ripping a double to drive in Dominic Smith -- who started in left field -- and give deGrom a lead before he even took the mound. Alonso is up to 44 RBI for the season. Smith hit a solo homer in the eighth to put the Mets back up by four after Arizona's seventh-inning run.
5) The Mets had five straight hits to begin the fourth inning. Michael Conforto started it with a bunt single against the shift before Todd Frazier's two-run homer put the Mets up 3-0.
