Steven Matz pitched one of his best games of the season, while Mickey Callaway was ejected in the Mets' 5-3 win over the Rockies on Saturday. >> Box score
Six things to know from Saturday's game...
1) Matz started out the game on fire, striking out five Rockies over the first two innings. He kept Rockies hitters guessing all night, tossing six innings while allowing just two earned runs (three overall). Matz struck out 10 hitters on the night, his highest total of 2019. He's 5-4 on the season with a 3.88 ERA.
2) Callaway was ejected from the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with the score 3-3. The Mets' skipper was seemingly fed up with home plate umpire Mike Winter's strike zone. He came out of the dugout to argue and was promptly tossed.
3) Carlos Gomez provided the Mets with some power early. The center fielder slammed his second homer of the season off of Rockies starter Jon Gray in the second inning. The two-run shot got the Mets out to an early 2-0 lead.
4) With the Mets leading 3-2 in the top of the fourth, a Todd Frazier throwing error allowed Brendan Rogers to score the tying the run. Frazier cut off a throw from Michael Conforto, but then committed his fourth error of the season when throwing the ball away at second base.
5) The Mets took the lead back in the sixth, thanks in part to a Wilson Ramos leadoff double, and Pete Alonso extended the Mets' lead in the seventh with his 21st home run of the season. The ball barely cleared the left-field fence, but replay confirmed that it was indeed a home run. Twelve of Alonso's 21 home runs have come in the seventh inning or later.
6) The Mets' bullpen had a strong night, highlighted by Seth Lugo, who pitched two 1-2-3 innings for the Mets in the seventh and eighth. Edwin Diaz then successfully closed things out in the ninth.
