Five Takeaways from Saturday's game

1) One night after tying the all-time rookie home run record, Pete Alonso rewrote the history books on Saturday, blasting his 53rd home run of the season. His solo home run in the bottom of the third inning extended the Mets lead to 3-0. Aside from becoming just the all-time home run leader for rookies, Alonso is also just the ninth player overall in NL history to hit at least 53 home runs in a season. The first baseman raised both arms as the ball sailed over the wall in right-center, and was given a standing ovation by the Citi Field crowd. 

2) While Alonso shined the brightest on Saturday night, Steven Matz put together a very strong final performance in his 2019 finale. The left-hander went 6.0 shutout innings, allowing just two hits. He struck out seven, but he did walk five batter, raising his pitch count to 98. Matz will finish the year with a 4.21 ERA, and a 1.35 WHIP, and while his numbers aren't the strongest, perhaps the best part of his season was that he stayed healthy for the most part, starting 30 games for the second straight year. 

3) Rene Rivera got things started for the Mets in the third inning. After Todd Frazier singled to lead off the inning, Rivera slammed his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to give the Mets a 2-0 lead.

4) After Matz left the game, Jeurys Familia was called upon to pitch the seventh. The right-hander allowed a two-out single to Ozzie Albies, but he struck out two in his scoreless inning of work, including Freddie Freeman to end the frame. Familia has had a 2019 season to forget, as his ERA now sits at 5.70 on the year.

5) After Brad Brach pitched a scoreless eighth, the Mets turned the ball over to Edwin Diaz, who had not recorded a save since Aug. 15. Diaz quickly recorded the first two outs, and then punched out Dansby Swanson for a 1-2-3 save, his 26th save of the season.

The Mets complete their 2019 season as they host the Braves at Citi Field. Noah Syndergaard (10-8, 4.30 ERA) will take the ball for the Mets against fellow righty Mike Soroka (13-4, 2.60 ERA) with first pitch set for 3:10 p.m.
