Five Takeaway's from Monday's game
1) While known for his skills at hitting anything, Jeff McNeil's started to build himself a power reputation over the past few days. McNeil homered for the third-straight game on Monday and wasted little in doing so. McNeil hit a homer on the first throw from Marlins pitcher Robert Dugger in the game. Not only that, Dugger was making his major league debut, so McNeil sent the first pitch of his career over the right field fence in Citi Field.
2) Jacob deGrom picked up the win on the mound and the oft-missing Mets offense when he's starting showed up for him. So much so that deGrom even joined in on the festivities. On the mound, deGrom allowed fewer than three earned runs for the 13th straight time. The Marlins had five hits and two runs against deGrom, as he struck out eight . At the plate, deGrom helped himself with two RBI in the fourth inning on a single to center field, which scored Todd Frazier and J.D. Davis.
3) Amed Rosario's all-around excellent play continues. In the first inning, Rosario made a smart decision to throw the lead runner out at third on a hard hit ground ball to him at shortstop. After a review, the play stood. At the plate, Rosario had two hits, including an opposite-field homer, his 12th of the year, in the third inning which gave the Mets the lead. With the home run, Rosario is one of 17 players in the majors with 12 homers and 12 steals this year.
4) Michael Conforto made a big play defensively early in the game for the Mets, which could've saved the day for deGrom. In the second inning, back-to-back doubles from Brian Anderson and Starling Castro, respectively, tied the game at one. Later in the inning, Jorge Alfaro walked and with two runs on, Dugger almost helped his own cause as he connected on a shot to right-center field. Conforto, running from right field, made the two-out catch over his head to end the inning. At the plate, Conforto walked and later scored a run.
5) In relief, the Mets turned to Justin Wilson in the eighth inning and he had a promising showing with two strikeouts. Despite that, Mickey Callaway still decided to head to Edwin Diaz for the four-out save. Diaz did hit a batter and walk another, but didn't allow a run and fanned two batters for the save.
