While Jacob deGrom had a strong outing, he was outdueled by Padres rookie Chris Paddack as the Mets lost to San Diego 4-0 on Monday at Petco Park. > Box score
Five things to know about Monday's game
1) DeGrom (2-4, 3.60 ERA) struck out seven batters in seven innings, giving up four hits and two runs, retiring 12 of the first 13 batters he faced before surrendering a solo homer to Hunter Renfroe.
2) While deGrom was good, Paddack (3-1, 1.55 ERA) was better. The Padres rookie struck out 11 batters in 7 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up four hits and one walk.
3) The Mets only had one baserunner on second base the entire night, and went 0-for-2 in three opportunities. With two on and two out in the top of the sixth, Paddack got Michael Conforto to fly out to left field, ending the Mets' biggest threat of the night.
4) Pete Alonso, whom Paddack called out for winning the National League Rookie of the Month, went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts against the 23-year-old Padres rookie.
5) The Padres added one insurance run in the seventh inning on a Ty France sac fly and two in the eighth inning when Eric Hosmer hit a two-run double off Justin Wilson.
