Mets owner Steve Cohen, in a brief follow-up exchange following his tweet criticizing Steven Matz’s agent, did reserve a few kind words for Matz himself.
"Not happy with the agent's interaction with us," Cohen, who was already at work at his day job trading at his hedge fund, Point72, told SNY. "I wish Matz well."
On Tuesday night, Matz agreed to a four-year, $44 million contract with the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Mets were upset because of a belief gleaned from conversations with agent Rob Martin that Matz wanted to return to New York, and would give them the chance to match any offer.
Martin did not respond to a request for comment.
Earlier on Wednesday morning, Cohen tweeted, "I’m not happy this morning. I’ve never seen such unprofessional behavior exhibited by a player’s agent. I guess words and promises don’t matter."
Matz, of course, was drafted and developed by the Mets before enjoying a career renaissance in Toronto last year. He was 31-41, with a 4.35 ERA, in six years in New York. Last year, he was 14-7, with a 3.82 ERA with the Blue Jays.
