The Mets begin a grueling 10-game West Coast road trip on Friday against the Los Angeles Angels. With the amount of traveling and wear on the current roster, some reinforcements will be needed. So it’s a good thing that the Mets could potentially see Starling Marte back relatively soon.
“He worked out today, on the field, ran and he’ll fly to Port St. Lucie and continue the rehab process,” manager Carlos Mendoza told the media before Friday’s game. “We’ll see where we’re at by the end.”
Marte told the New York Post’s Mike Puma that he expects to be playing in minor league rehab games next week. Mendoza said he’s not going to put a timetable on Marte’s progress, despite what the outfielder said, but was pleased with how far he’s come.
“He still has to go through the process, but he’s getting close,” the Mets skipper said.
Updates on Reed Garrett and Sean Reid-Foley
Reid-Foley is scheduled to pitch Friday with Double-A Binghamton, but there is inclement weather in the area, which could potentially postpone the game. If the right-hander doesn’t pitch on Friday, he’ll take the mound in Saturday’s game.
The Mets placed Reid-Foley on the IL in late June with a shoulder impingement and he’s made a couple of appearances with Binghamton in his rehab already. His last appearance came on Wednesday where he pitched a scoreless inning and struck out three batters.
As for Garrett, he’ll pitch in Saturday’s game with Binghamton for sure.
The veteran right-hander was placed on the IL back on July 11 with right elbow inflammation. This will be Garrett’s first minor league assignment.
