-- It was a pitcher's duel in Queens on Monday night. Through five innings, the two teams combined for nine hits, with the score 1-1 thanks to an RBI double by Heston Kjerstad (Orioles) and a solo shot by A.J. Ewing (Mets).

-- Mets rookie right-hander Jonah Tong made the seventh start of his career, and his second of 2026, following his recent outing seven days ago against the Miami Marlins. Tong was stellar, striking out six and allowing one unearned run - the aforementioned Kjerstad double, which scored Jackson Holliday, who advanced earlier in the inning on a passed ball - on just four hits and one walk through six full innings. Of his 83 pitches, 57 were thrown for strikes.

-- Pete Alonso made his long-awaited return to Citi Field, donning the black and orange of the Orioles and doffing his cap to the cheering Mets fans who will always be grateful for his time in New York. He went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout.

-- The O's took the lead in the eighth inning on yet another solo homer, this one off the bat of star shortstop Gunnar Henderson, who cranked a hanging slider thrown by Mets reliever Dedniel Núñez over the fence in right-center field.

-- Kodai Senga worked out of a jam with one out and runners on the corners, keeping the Mets deficit at just one run entering last licks by striking out two batters in a row. In the bottom of the ninth, Orioles righty Rico Garcia shut the door by retiring the side in order, and the Mets lost 2-1.

Tong flashed the potential which made him such a highly-touted prospect within the Mets organization during these last few years. He tunneled his fastball and changeup effectively all night, keeping Baltimore's batters off balance and off the basepaths.
