The talk surrounding the Mets' depth players has always been who will be sent down when Jed Lowrie returns to the team. But the move made by the team on Friday caught many by surprise.

Manager Mickey Callaway announced they have sent down 1B Dom Smith to Triple-A Syracuse, and called up INF Adeiny Hechavarria.

It's a shocking move to say the least, as Smith was not just the Mets' only left-handed bat on the bench, but he has been raking. In 29 games this season, he's hitting .333/.459/.400 with two doubles and four RBI in 37 plate appearances. Pete Alonso has been a mainstay at first base, though, which has limited Smith's chances to start. Still, Callaway has managed to get him in all but two games this season.

Smith reacted to the demotion by using recently-deceased rapper Nipsey Hussle's motto, "The Marathon Continues." The 23-year-old's walk up songs -- "Double Up" and "Hussle & Motivate" -- are both Nipsey Hussle tracks.

Hechavarria returns to the Mets after hitting .348/.382/.446 with nine doubles and 17 RBI in Syracuse. A reason behind the call up was the May 1 opt-out he had in his contract, which used according to The Post's Ken Davidoff. The Mets had until today to call him up, or he would have became a free agent.

It's also worth noting that the Mets would have shelled out $1 million to Hechavarria had he been with the big club for 150 days this season. There are now 149 days left.

Though Smith will get more playing time in Syracuse, the Mets are now left without a lefty bat on their bench for pinch-hit situations.
