Mets manager Mickey Callaway's demeanor remained steady following Tuesday night's crushing loss where the bullpen blew a six-run ninth inning lead for the first time in franchise history, but several members of the team -- including Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil -- were devastated.

In the wake of that devastation, Callaway will be meeting with the team before Wednesday's series finale in Washington, D.C.

"I'm gonna talk to the guys today," Callaway said Wednesday morning during his pregame briefing. "I'm gonna meet with them after I get done here and just tell them 'hey, that was a tough loss but we have to put it behind us.' These guys have been battling all season and they'll continue to do that. I just want them to know that. We gotta get it done. And we'll talk a little about that."

Callaway was calm on Tuesday night, saying the loss was "a little tougher than some others," and explained Wednesday that while it's rare for him to address the team, he felt it needed to be done.

"Not often, not often -- especially with this bunch," Callaway said about the frequency of meeting with the team. "They just don't require that all the time. They come to the field every day to play and win games. They've been a resilient bunch of guys, but today -- considering what happened last night, the way it happened -- I think that it's probably necessary."

With their loss on Tuesday night, the Mets fell to 70-68 and dropped to 5.0 games behind the Cubs in the Wild Card race. Along with the Cubs winning, the Phillies, Brewers, and Diamondbacks all won as the gap widened between the Mets and every team in front of them.

Still, the Mets would've certainly been satisfied coming to D.C. and winning two of three games after taking two of three games from the Phillies over the weekend. And if the Mets win on Wednesday, they will have done just that.

The disastrous and almost implausible way the Mets lost on Tuesday night will likely continue to cloud things even if they win on Wednesday, and that's a bit understandable. But two of three is two of three, no matter how it shakes out.

And two of three is what Callaway is trying to help ensure by meeting with his team before Wednesday's game.
