You know what? Good point. Probably, with the usual caveat (this goes for your Mike Schildt questions, too) that we don’t yet know who will hire the Mets’ next manager.
I was talking to a rival GM on Friday who opined that if the Yankees moved on from Aaron Boone, he would have a very easy time getting another job.
Why not the Mets? He is seasoned and polished in the New York market, a strong collaborator with the contemporary front office, and loved by players.
Alas for the Mets, these are the same reasons why I expect Boone to return to the Yankees on a new contract. This is not a done deal, but it’s pretty clear that the prevailing sentiment in the Bronx is that Boone should return.
And why wouldn’t they? Why are we even having this conversation after a .601 winning percentage in Boone’s first four years on the job, all of which ended in a postseason appearance? I know, blah blah blah, if George were still alive. But let’s live in the modern game, shall we?
There remains a chance that the Boone/Yankees deal could blow up. That’s always the case until someone signs, and not everyone at Yankee Stadium loves him.
If it does, of course the Mets should jump in. I just don’t think they’ll be so lucky.
