Pete Alonso was originally thought to just having been given the night off after he wasn't included in the Mets' lineup on Wednesday night, but apparently that wasn't the real reason.

Luis Rojas told reporters over Zoom after the Mets' walk-off loss to the Atlanta Braves that Alonso is actually dealing with a sore right hand, and was kept out for precautionary measures.

"Pete was not available... right now he's got a little bit of soreness in his left wrist/hand," Rojas revealed. "We agreed on giving him a day off today that will connect with the day off tomorrow, and then reassess on Friday to see how he feels. He had X-ray's done and everything was negative there."

Rojas added that the team thinks the soreness could be stemming from a HBP he suffered back in St. Louis vs. the Cardinals a couple weeks back.

When asked if Alonso had or will have an MRI, Rojas said that they're "probably heading that way."

The Mets already have a long list of players on the IL, so adding another -- especially one the caliber of Alonso -- would put a blockade in front of the team's big plans for this season.

The fact that Alonso has played in every game up until Wednesday since that HBP, and that the X-rays came back negative, is pretty huge for the Mets' confidence that he'll be back on track by Friday.
