Mets looking at free agent Dellin Betances

31-year-old struggled with injuries in 2019

Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen already said he's going to take a look at what can be done to improve the team's bullpen this offseason.

Could that start with someone in their own backyard?

According to SNY's Andy Martino, the Mets are looking at Yankees' free agent Dellin Betances as an option to bolster their bullpen.

The 31-year-old is freshh off a cruel season in terms of luck and injury. An All-Star caliber righty, Betances had a lat strain hold him out until Sept. 15. His return lasted two strikeouts and Betances proceeded to injure his Achilles. That was the end of his season.

With the injury history in mind, the Mets and any team looking to add Betances will be cautious while talking contract details due to the injuries.

Prior to his injury history, Betances put together a strong resume with the Yankees, though. He has five-straight seasons with 100-plus strikeouts, including his single-season high in 2014 of 135. In 2018, Betances notched 115 punch outs. From 2014-2018, Betances had a combined 2.22 ERA.

Van Wagenen did not directly address any potential interest in Betances while speaking from the GM meetings on Monday, but he did discuss the potential of adding to that grouping. Two in-house players, Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman, could be two players that influence whether or not the Mets do go after an arm for their bullpen such as Betances.

"Hard to say. We've talked about Seth Lugo's and Robert Gsellman's throwing program this offseason and how they are going to be at least prepared in a situation to start next year. If we were to add starting pitching this winter and those two players went back to the bullpen, that impacts how many pieces and how many arms we would want to add to that mix."
