To make room on the roster for newly-signed Justin Wilson, the Mets DFA'd infielder Gavin Cecchini -- the team's first round pick (12th overall) in the 2012 MLB Draft.

The 25-year-old Cecchini, who missed most of the 2018 season due to a foot injury, hit .217/.270/.301 in 36 games for the Mets (four in 2016, 32 in 2017).

In seven minor league seasons with the Mets, Cecchini hit .284/.348/.399 with 17 homers and 135 doubles in 602 games.

While it was a bit of a surprise that the Mets DFA'd Cecchini instead of 40-man roster pitchers such as Tim Peterson and Drew Gagnon, the team is loaded when it comes to infielders on the 40-man roster.

After DFA'ing Cecchini, the Mets still have nine infielders on the 40-man -- Robinson CanoJ.D. Davis, Todd Frazier, Luis Guillorme, Jed Lowrie, Jeff McNeil, T.J. Rivera, Amed Rosario, and Dominic Smith.

Of the nine players above, it's possible four (Davis, Guillorme, Rivera, and Smith) all open the 2019 season with Triple-A Syracuse.
