Syndergaard starting as scheduled on Tuesday night would seemingly be an indication that a trade is not close, since it would be odd for any team to risk injury to a player who is the subject of deep trade discussions this close to the deadline.

In talks with the Twins about Syndergaard, the Mets asked for OF Byron Buxton and were told no, reports LaVelle E Neal of the Star Tribune.

Buxton is having a solid season -- hitting .259/.313/.502 with nine homers and 28 doubles, but has slashed just .236/.291/.411 during his five-year career.

While odds of a Syndergaard trade seem to be decreasing, there are "still a ton of active trade conversations" regarding Syndergaard and Edwin Diaz, reports SNY's Andy Martino.

Martino notes that the Mets don't feel they have to deal either player, and that they won't do it unless they're "blown away."

By landing Marcus Stroman, the Mets effectively set the market on starting pitching with the trade deadline fast approaching.

As ESPN's Jeff Passan reported during the network's Braves-Nationals broadcast Monday, "the more people I speak with today, the less I feel that Noah Syndergaard is getting traded." The Mets are likely looking to recoup a much bigger haul than what they gave up for Stroman, and Passan said that if contenders were unwilling to pay a higher price than the Mets sent the Blue Jays, he's unsure how much higher they would go for Syndergaard.

It's likelier at the moment that the Mets trade Zack Wheeler instead of Syndergaard, SNY's Andy Martino reported Sunday night.

If the Mets do trade Syndergaard, though, MLB.com's Jon Morosi said during an appearance Monday on the MLB Network that the Padres are the favorite.

If the Mets deal Syndergaard, it could help them land another ace from the rumor mill. According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the Mets are exploring sending Syndergaard to the San Diego Padres and then using some of the return to then land Marcus Stroman from the Toronto Blue Jays.

According to Sherman, the Mets have let interested teams know that in addition to a few top prospects, they would also want a pitcher back in the deal that can enter their starting rotation immediately.

The Mets have had discussions with the Twins about a Syndergaard trade and have interest in their top two prospects -- SS Royce Lewis and OF Alex Kirilloff, reports LaVelle E. Neal III of the Star Tribune.

The 20-year-old Lewis (the No. 7 prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline) is currently in High-A, while the 21-year-old Kirilloff (the No. 11 prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline) is in Double-A.

If the Mets and Padres engage on Syndergaard without a third team involved, San Diego could be one of the best fits due to their terrific farm system. San Diego has eight of the top 100 prospects in baseball, according to MLB.com's rankings. That includes LHP Mackenzie Gore (No. 3 overall), INF Luis Urias (No. 20), RHP Luis Patino (No. 40), and LHP Adrian Morejon (No. 49).

Syndergaard is drawing interest from the Brewers, while some with the Astros are "intrigued" at the possibility of dealing for him, reports MLB.com's Jon Morosi.

SNY's Andy Martino reported recently that it is far more likely the Mets explore trading Syndergaard this winter, but that he isn't a total lock to be a Met beyond the July 31 trade deadline.

The 26-year-old Syndergaard is under Mets control through the 2021 season, so the Mets shouldn't be in any rush to deal him -- especially since his career-worst ERA this season means New York would be trading him at his lowest value.

While Syndergaard has struggled this season, his peripherals paint a rosier picture than his ERA. His FIP is 3.98 and his walk rate is close to what it was in 2018. But the inability to throw his slider as an out-pitch this season has changed the kind of pitcher Syndergaard is -- at least temporarily.

As far as what the Astros and Brewers could potentially offer for Syndergaard, Houston had the sixth-best farm system before the season, according to MLB.com, while Milwaukee was middle of the pack.

A few intriguing prospects on the Astros are RHP Forrest Whitley and OF Kyle Tucker, viewed by most as two of the Top 15 prospects in all of baseball. The Brewers have one consensus Top 50 prospect -- 2B Keston Hiura -- but he is already excelling in the majors and it's hard to see him being available.
