According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, if the Giants decide to move on from head coach Pat Shurmur and if the Cowboys part ways with Jason Garrett, then the Giants would be a potential landing spot for Garrett.
"My understanding is the Giants have emerged as a real and legitimate, potential landing landing spot for Garrett," Rapoport said. "First of all, it is his preferred destination if he can't stick with the Cowboys."
Shurmur is under a lot of pressure, as the Giants are 2-8 this season and just 7-19 overall in two seasons as the head coach. While Garrett is 83-63 as the Cowboys head coach since taking over as an interim head coach in 2010.
"And second, back in 2014, the Giants were trying to decide should they fire Tom Coughlin," Rapoport said. "My understanding is they would have fired Coughlin if they could get Jason Garrett, instead he signed an extension. The Giants held onto Coughlin."
Coughlin coached the Giants from 2004 to 2015, winning two Super Bowls, and going 102-90 overall. The team decided to part ways with him after three-straight losing seasons, and went on to hire Ben McAdoo for the 2016 season. Though, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano mentioned that the report regarding Garrett to the Giants in 2014 is not true, according to his understanding.
Garrett was a backup quarterback for the Giants in 2000, appearing in just two games with the team. He soon got into coaching after his playing days were over, joining the Dolphins as a quarterbacks coach in 2005 and then becoming the offensive coordinator of the Cowboys in 2007.
There are a lot of "ifs" in this report of Garrett to the Giants, as he would need to be let go by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones first. But it is something to keep an eye on, especially if the Giants and Shurmur part ways.
"A team source confirmed, though, that there were no immediate plans for ownership to either fire Shurmur or to force any staff shakeup in the wake of the Giants' 2-8 record -- at least until the end of the season," Vacchiano said after the Giants Week 10 loss to the Jets.
