The Yankees have released their 30-man roster for the start of the 2020 MLB season.

Breaking it down, we notice that the Yankees are carrying three catchers, and they hinted at that when Chris Iannetta was signed to a big league deal. Luis Avilan was also signed to one, and he will be featured in the bullpen.

But there will be some additions coming along soon. Aroldis Chapman and Luis Cessa are both not on the roster, as they had positive coronavirus tests. Cessa has been back with the Yankees after quarantining and has pitching well, but it doesn’t look like he’s ready to return just yet. Chapman is still in self-isolation and will return when he is clear of the virus.

You may also notice that Jordan Montgomery isn’t on the roster, but that’s merely a paper thing to give the Yanks some more roster flexibility to start.

“He will go in Game 6 essentially,” Boone told reporters on Wednesday. So don’t worry about that after his solid summer camp. He’ll be added to the roster when it’s turn in the rotation.

And Masahiro Tanaka won’t be featured right now, as he continues to work his way back from a mild concussion. That’s only expected to be one start, though, so he would be another addition later on.

Two weeks from the start of the season, rosters need to be cut to 28 players, and then to 26 two weeks after that.
