Head coach Pat Shurmur on Giants following loss: 'They need to improve quickly'

Shurmur said team did not play well in any of the three facets

After watching his team get thoroughly dismantled by the Cowboys in a 35-17 Week 1 loss, Giants head coach Pat Shurmur didn't have a ton of positive things to say following the game.

"We certainly didn't do well enough on offense, defense or special teams to win against a good team that played well," Shurmur said. "We didn't score enough points and we certainly gave up too many."

Big Blue started well on Sunday, scoring a touchdown on their first drive after forcing the Cowboys to punt on their first possession of the game. But it was all downhill from there, as they got outscored 21-0 in the rest of the first half and never got close the rest of the way.

"On defense, there were some big plays against us in the passing game and we've got to get that rectified," Shurmur said. "Especially against a good team."

Quarterback Eli Manning tried to remain optimistic following the game. The two-time Super Bowl MVP was 30-for-44 with 306 yards passing before he was replaced by Daniel Jones for the Giants' final drive of the game.

"There are 16 other teams that are in this situation, losing Week 1," Manning said. "It's no fun but it's a long season. There's some things we need to improve on. You can't treat it any differently. We just have to keep working and get ready for the Bills."

With the Bills looming next week, Shurmur is prepared to get the inexperienced Giants back ready to play a team that erased a 16-point deficit against the Jets on Sunday.

"We had a lot of young players out there playing for the first time," Shurmur said. "There's some good stuff but there's some stuff that we've got to get cleaned up. They need to improve quickly."
