While Jarred Kelenic has been a former-Met for longer than he was an actual Met, the coverage of him in New York (here and elsewhere) continues.

One person surprised by that? His mom.

"It still surprises me seeing him in New York newspapers after all this time," Kelenic's mother, Lisa, told Joe Doyle of Baseball America. "He's 19. He was yours for four months. You broke up with him."

The coverage of Kelenic has been ratcheted up due to his red-hot performance earlier this season and the fact that Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz have been disappointments after coming over to Seattle in the deal that sent Kelenic there.

Let's rewind to before the trade went down. The mere inclusion of Kelenic's name in rumors set off alarms for tons of fans and evaluators. When it became official, things rose to another level. And the reaction and coverage vaulted to yet another level when Kelenic started the season by tearing the cover off the ball.

While Kelenic has cooled off since his promotion to High-A (where he is hitting .250/.325/.444 with four homers in 30 games), the buzz around him hasn't died down, with the 20-year-old (his birthday was July 16) now viewed by many top evaluators as one of the top 30 or so prospects in all of baseball.

That Kelenic has risen to such heights this quickly has only led to even more intense debate regarding how the Mets operated this offseason, whether they were right to try to contend in 2019 and what their plan should be going forward when it comes to potentially hanging on to prospects as highly regarded as Kelenic.

And as much as many Mets fans would likely be as happy as Kelenic's mom if New York writers stopped writing about Kelenic, it's not going to happen any time soon. For multiple reasons.
