The Giants have been scouting Dwayne Haskins a lot and have interest in him with the No. 6 pick in the Draft, with a lot of NFL people thinking the Giants are "all over" Haskins right now, according to SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.
During the NFL Combine, Giants GM Dave Gettleman said it would be a "dream" to find the next franchise quarterback to take the reins from Eli Manning, and spoke about using the "Kansas City model," suggesting he wanted to find Manning's replacement sooner rather than later.
The Giants may have their eyes on Haskins at No. 6, but there is a chance he might not be there by that point -- meaning Big Blue's only chance to nab him could be by trading up (the Jets are open to dealing the No. 3 overall pick, even if it's to the Giants).
One thing that could potentially work in the Giants or another team's favor when it comes to Haskins is the possibility that QB Kyler Murray could be selected No. 1 overall by the Cardinals, which would push Nick Bosa and/or Josh Allen further back in the Draft.
While the Giants have been connected to Haskins by some, there are others around the NFL who have told Vacchiano the team is more likely to draft a pass-rusher at No. 6 than a QB.
If Haskins isn't there for the Giants at No. 6 or if he's there and they opt for a pass-rusher instead, options available could include Florida State's Brian Burns, Michigan's Rashan Gary, and Montez Sweat of Mississippi State, who ran a blazing fast 40-yard dash at the Combine.
If Haskins is there at No. 6 and the Giants pounce (or trade up to get him), they would be getting a pocket-passer who completed 70 percent of his passes last season for Ohio State while throwing for 4,831 yards, tossing 50 touchdowns and just eight interceptions.
The 21-year-old Haskins, who had a mixed showing at the Combine, recently said it would be a "dream come true" to be drafted by the Giants.
"It'd be a dream come true," he said. "As far as being able to go back home and play for that great franchise, with great skill players. Either way what happens, I'm excited to be in the NFL … New York would be a great spot for me."
If Haskins is taken by the Giants, there's a strong chance he'd sit for a year while learning from Manning. And Haskins said that is something he would be fine with.
"I can point to Ohio State, how I didn't play for a year and a half, played a little bit as a backup," he said. "That I'm comfortable enough to learn from someone that's ahead of me but be ready to compete for when my time's called."
