Things to know about today's game

1) Aaron Hicks and Neil Walker accounted for the only two runs of the day for the Yankees. Hicks hit an RBI single in the third inning and Walker added a solo home run in the fourth. Giancarlo Stanton had a team-high two hits on a quiet day for most of the Yankees' offense. Walker's home run was the' only extra-base hit of the game for the Yankees.

2) Tanaka kept the Indians from scoring until the fourth inning, when Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run home run to left field. Tanaka finished with two runs on six hits and five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. He walked one batter.

3) Green allowed three runs in the eighth inning as the Indians added to their lead. Michael Brantley hit a solo homer, Yan Gomes hit a sacrifice fly, and Erik Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch by Green.

That's a bummer of a finish to the first half of the season, but the Yankees cannot be disappointed with where they stand despite potentially losing another game in the standings to the Red Sox.

The Yankees had one of their best first halves in franchise history as they are currently on pace to win 106 games. The discouraging aspect is that if the season ended today, the Yankees would be playing in the American League Wild Card game, which we know can be an absolute crapshoot.

There is good news that came out of the first-half finale. First, Tanaka looked to be much more at ease than his first game back from the disabled list. Secondly, the break seems to be coming at a good time for some of the Yankees who appear to be tiring at various spots on the roster. Finally, the Yankees will have a softer schedule on paper in the second half than the first half, so hopefully they'll be able to gain some ground on the first-place Red Sox.

What's next

The Yankees will begin a three-game series with the Mets on Friday at Yankee Stadium.
