Nets forward Caris LeVert was taken off the court on a stretcher after he suffered a gruesome leg injury in the second quarter of Monday's game against the Timberwolves.

LeVert landed awkwardly on his right ankle as he attempted to break up a play with just 3.7 seconds remaining in the half.

"Tough blow," head coach Kenny Atkinson said after the game, according to The Athletic's Michael Scotto. "He's the heart and soul of our program. ... I feel for him. He's had a fantastic start of the season. ... I just know Caris, if anybody is coming back from this, knowing the human, the character, the person, the player, he'll come back from this."

He had a towel wrapped over his head and towels draped over his leg as players huddled around him. Fans in the crowd gave him an ovation as he headed to the locker room.

LeVert left the arena in an ambulance for a nearby hospital to undergo further evaluations, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

LeVert scored 10 points and recorded four rebounds and four assists in 16:42 before he left the game. The Nets trailed the Timberwolves 57-53 at halftime and lost 120-113.
