There is a strong chance that the Mets will sign second baseman Joe Panik once he clears waivers at 1 p.m. Friday, according to major league sources.
The Mets are not the only team interested in Panik, a former All-Star. He is expected to choose relatively quickly.
Panik, 28, is a product of Hopewell Junction, N.Y. and St. John's University. He is batting .235 this year, with a .627 OPS.
