With speculation ramping up that the Mets could or should option beleaguered reliever Edwin Diaz to the minor leagues, the team remains committed to working with Diaz with the big club, and does not intend to send him down at this time.
Diaz, the best closer in baseball last year, has effectively lost that job with the Mets. Mickey Callaway has been using Seth Lugo in higher-leverage spots.
Now that Jeurys Familia seems to have rediscovered the mechanics that help him keep his pitches down, he could see more action in key situations as well. Lefty Justin Wilson has been solid, and new acquisition Brad Brach showed off a change-up with impressive movement in a brief appearance Sunday.
All of these relievers will see action in big spots. Diaz's struggles commanding both his fastball and slider have cost him his role, but he will remain with the team, working with pitching coach Phil Regan, bullpen coach Ricky Bones, and pitching strategist Jeremy Accardo.
