It's been great to see and hear that the Giants' sixth overall pick in Daniel Jones has been impressing during the team's voluntary practices as well as their three-day minicamp.

Jones' new teammates and coaches have noticed by the day that he became more comfortable with the offense, and in turn, his confidence rose.

"You can see him getting confident," Evan Engram said of Jones after minicamp. "Anytime you're coming in as a rookie, you're going to be a little shaky or a little nervous. You kind of see him starting to brush that off, get into his groove and take advantage of everything he's given."

While this is what Giants fans want to see of Jones' development, it was always the plan to have Jones sit behind veteran Eli Manning until he's fully ready. Isn't that right Coach Shurmur?

"I think we're going to play the very best player. I know we're dancing around the words here, but right now, Eli is getting ready to have a great year and Daniel is getting ready to play," Shurmur told the media after another OTA on Tuesday. "You just see what happens with it."

Oh.

So scratch that: It looks like the door is wide open for the Giants to have a true quarterback competition at training camp this summer.

Like the masses, Shurmur has been impressed with what he sees from his rookie signal caller, and says "he's on track" to potentially start Week 1 if that's the decision he makes at the end of the day.

"I think he's had a really, really productive offseason," Shumur said. "He's on track with the goal to be ready to play Day 1. That's really what all the players need to be thinking. The quarterback stuff will kinda be on the front burner for everybody moving forward, I get that."

As for Manning, he has made it known he will be preparing to start like he normally has for Big Blue despite the task of grooming Jones. He'll help when he sees fit, but Manning's main goal is to secure his starting role for as long as he can hold on.

Shurmur confirmed that Manning will be the starter entering training camp, though.

"Eli is the starter and this guy is getting ready to play," Shurmur said, with "this guy" meaning Jones.

Shurmur's statement, though, should be viewed as a smart one by a coach. Manning will obviously lead the depth chart going into camp, but leaving each position open for competition is the right way to make the 53-man roster the best it can be. It also gets the most out of the locks on the team, like Saquon Barkley and Sterling Shepard for example.

But after Jones' solid offseason thus far, this competition -- one that many fans didn't necessarily expect heading into training camp -- now has everyone intently waiting to see who really will be leading the offense in Week 1.
