After 13 seasons at the big league level, Troy Tulowitzki has decided to call it a career.
The former Rockie, Blue Jay, and Yankee officially announced his retirement on Thursday afternoon. The 34-year-old made five All-Star teams and won two Gold Gloves during his illustrious career. He slugged 225 home runs and finished with a career .290 batting average.
"For as long as I can remember, my dream was to compete at the highest level as a Major League Baseball Player … to wear a big league uniform and play hard for my teammates and the fans," Tulowitzki said via an official statement. "I will forever be grateful for every day that I've had to live out my dream. It has been an absolute honor.
"I will always look back with tremendous gratitude for having the privilege of playing as long as I did. There is no way to truly express my gratitude to the fans of Colorado, Toronto and New York. They always made my family and I feel so welcome."
A myriad of injuries derailed the latter part of his career. A bone spur in his right ankle caused him to miss all of 2018, and a left calf stain limited him to just five games in a Yankees uniform in 2019. He went 2-11 at the plate with a solo home run in his very limited time with the Bombers.
"I want to thank the Yankees organization and Brian Cashman for giving me the opportunity to wear the Yankees uniform and live out another childhood dream. I wish that my health had allowed for a different ending to that chapter."
