The Yankees picked up their first win in the Subway Series this season after a 4-2 victory over the Mets on Monday night, thanks to a stellar performance from Domingo German.

- Domingo German began the game by hitting Brandon Nimmo in the foot, but would get out of it thanks to a double play. Max Scherzer began his half of the first by hitting Andrew Benintendi in the leg -- a little tit-for-tat -- but could not get through the inning without giving up a run.

Anthony Rizzo lofted a single over the head of Brett Baty who was playing in the shift, allowing Benintendi to run to third base. DJ LeMahieu would cash him in with a sacrifice fly despite Starling Marte’s best efforts.

The Mets attempted to appeal to third base, saying Benintendi left early, but Rizzo ran to steal second to negate the attempt. Scherzer threw the ball over Jeff McNeil’s head and Rizzo scampered to third. However, the umpires ruled that play hadn’t resumed before Rizzo tried to steal second so the Yankees first baseman had to return to first. It was an odd sequence of events.

- Aaron Judge would eventually get his revenge on Scherzer. After their first meeting where he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts -- and striking out in the first inning of this game -- the frontrunner for the AL MVP launched a fast ball that ran in over the right field wall to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead after three. That snapped a streak of 41 plate appearances without a homer.

Judge would narrowly miss another in the fifth that was caught on the warning track. Scherzer's slider was Judge's kryptonite in their last meeting, but the slugger got the better of the future Hall of Famer on this night. He would go 2-for-4 against Scherzer.

- German really outpitched Scherzer in this one. He got out of jams with well-timed double plays and was economical with his pitches. He had just 52 pitches through five innings. However, he would find trouble in the sixth after James McCann reached base after hitting a single off of German’s leg after a 12-pitch at-bat, but German would get out of it.

German would find trouble again in the seventh. Oswaldo Cabrera dropped a pop out with one out in the seventh to allow Pete Alonso to reach first. Daniel Vogelbach made the Yankees pay with a two-run shot to cut the deficit to 3-2. German's night was done after that.

His final line was: 6.1 IP, 1 ER, 4 H and three strike outs after throwing 86 pitches. He would outduel Scherzer who had a final line of 6.2 IP, 7 H, 1 BB, 4 ER and three strike outs on 101 pitches.

- Benintendi continued his hot streak at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Over his last seven games, Benintendi is now 8-for-25 (.320) with a home run and three RBI. But more importantly, he’s getting on base and creating havoc.

- With the Yankees putting Scott Effross on the IL on Monday, Aaron Boone cobbled together the rest of the game after German left. Ron Marinaccio and Jonathan Loaisiga would combine to get the final eight outs, with Loaisiga getting the final four.
