Five takeaways from Wednesday's game…

1 ) The Yankees need James Paxton to be a stopper. He couldn't quell the bleeding tonight. Paxton's ERA on the season rose to 6.00 after allowing five runs on eight hits (including two home runs to Jose Altuve) and three walks. He labored through 95 pitches in just four innings of work. Simply put, Paxton has to better. He was brought in to sit atop the rotation and carry the club to the postseason. So far, Paxton has failed to live up to expectations.

2 ) This bullpen is in shambles. Tommy Kahnle took his spot on the ineffectiveness train, surrendering two runs on four hits in just two-thirds of an inning. Kahnle entered the game having allowed no runs in his three appearances this season. Later in the game, Zack Britton allowed an insurance run to the Astros after the Yankees decreased the deficit to one.

3 ) Joseph Harvey made his major league debut for the Yankees and performed quite well, tossing two innings of scoreless ball. Harvey allowed just one hit, walked one, and struck out three. With a bullpen in need of quality innings, maybe the 27-year-old rookie will provide a boost.

4 ) Luke Voit homered for the second straight game. As we mentioned yesterday, Voit needs to be more consistent and this could be the start of a hot stretch. His home run drove in two runs to bring his season total to 12, which now leads the club.

5 ) The Yankees showed some mettle in the eighth inning, getting to the Astros' bullpen for four runs to bring them within a run. It started with Voit's home run, and then they strung some very good at-bats together to make it a ball game. Unfortunately, the Yankees couldn't finish off the comeback and suffer a tough road sweep.

What's next

The Yankees return home for a three-game series against the White Sox starting Friday at 7:05 p.m. It's unknown who will get the ball for the Yanks, while Lucas Giolito is set to face the Bombers.
