Four takeaways from Wednesday night’s game

1. Masahiro Tanaka tossed a gem for the Yankees, but all for naught. Chad Green made his first appearance since Aug. 16, and after retiring the first two batters he faced, he allowed a single to Dansby Swanson and then allowed a two-run homer to Freddie Freeman that gave the Braves a 2-1 lead.

Tanaka finished with three hits allowed with four strikeouts and no walks in his five shutout innings of work. He had runners on first and second with two outs, but induced a ground out by Swanson to end the only real threat he faced all night. Tanaka left the game with just 66 pitches.

2. Much like the first game of the doubleheader, the Yankees struggled to get going on offense, staying scoreless until the fifth inning. With a Miguel Andujar single and an Erik Kratz double, Tyler Wade drove Andujar in with a sacrifice fly.

3. Andujar racked up two singles in his first appearance since Aug. 19. It was his first multi-hit game of the season, after being called up from the Alternate Site on Tuesday.

4. Aaron Judge knocked a single in the fourth inning in his first game after coming off the Injured List, but was taken out of the game in the sixth inning, with Clint Frazier taking over in right field. Judge had been placed on the IL on Aug. 14, retroactive to Aug. 12, with a right calf strain.

What’s next

The Yankees are off on Thursday and will face the Mets in a doubleheader at 4:05 p.m. on Friday in the Bronx. Left-hander Jordan Montgomery is slated to start game one for the Yankees, while their starter for game two is TBD. The Mets have not named their starter for either game.
