Six takeaways from Monday's game

1) Luke Voit continues to rake, especially in the first inning. For the second straight game and fourth time this season Voit homered in the first inning to give the Yankees a quick 1-0 lead. He homered again in the eighth inning to cap a 2-for-4 day at the plate and extend his hitting streak to 10 games and on-base streak to 35 games.

2) Domingo German continued to pitch brilliantly for the Yankees, lowering his ERA to 1.75 and WHIP to 0.82 as he tossed 6 2/3 innings allowing just one run on four hits and a walk while striking out five. German is showing he may have enough to stick around as a bona fide starting pitcher in the rotation.

3) Chad Green, who entered the game in relief of German, struggled yet again and has become a major problem in the Yankees' bullpen. In a 7-1 game in the eighth inning, Green loaded the bases on two hits and a walk before allowing a grand slam to Justin Bour to make it a 7-5 game. His ERA is now 16.43 on the season, allowing 14 runs in 7 2/3 innings.

4) Luis Cessa, on the other hand, has been shown much more promise than Green. While he allowed the first two batters to reach base, he got out of the eighth inning by striking out Brian Goodwin and getting Kevan Smith to ground into a 5-4-3 double play.

5) Brett Gardner also continued his hot hitting, falling a home run short of the cycle on a 3-for-4 night with a run scored.

6) It was also a day of firsts for two Yankees rookies. First baseman Mike Ford hit his first career home run -- a two-run shot into right center field in the fifth inning that put the Bombers up 4-1. Infielder Thairo Estrada also collected his first career hit with a single to load the bases in the second inning. Ford finished 2-for-3 at the plate while Estrada was 2-for-4 with a walk.
