Six takeaways from Thursday's game...

1) Masahiro Tanaka cruised through four shutout innings before he imploded. He allowed a pair of two-run homers in the fifth as the Angels tied the game at 4-4. He then walked two batters in the sixth, at which point Aaron Boone yanked him for Jonathan Holder. Holder allowed both inherited runners to score via a two-run single by David Fletcher. Five of the six runs Tanaka allowed in 5.2 innings were earned. He allowed six hits and three walks while striking out two. Tanaka walked three batters for the third straight start and has 11 walks over his last four outings. According to ESPN's Coley Harvey, Tanaka induced just one swing-and-miss throughout his 89 pitches, the lowest total of his career; Thursday was his 143rd MLB appearance, including the postseason.

2) Gary Sánchez didn't help matters behind the plate. When Holder entered to face Fletcher there were runners on first and second. A passed ball by Sánchez allowed both runners to advance and set Fletcher up for the two-run single. In the seventh, a Stephen Tarpley wild pitch allowed Kole Calhoun to get to second based. Ball four on Mike Trout's walk got by Sánchez for another passed ball, allowing Calhoun to get to third.

3) It was a sloppy game for the Yankees, and it got worse on the ensuing Andrelton Simmons RBI single to left. Tyler Wade could've made a better throw back to the infield, but Gio Urshela should've been able to field it and didn't, and his error allowed Trout to score from third and give the Angels an 8-4 lead. Joe Harvey then walked the next two batters before a force out at home for the second out. Fletcher then dunked a base hit into right field, and the ball skipped past Mike Tauchman, who looked clueless trying to field the ball, and Fletcher had a bases-clearing triple to put the Angels ahead 11-4.

4) Urshela did hit his first home run as a Yankee to put them up 2-0 in the fourth. DJ LeMahieu drove in Wade an inning prior for the Yankees' first run. The Yanks added two runs in the fifth as Luke Voit scored on a wild pitch and Gleyber Torres drove in Brett Gardner.

5) Gardner drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth when it appeared the Angels might let the Yankees back in the game. Sánchez flew out to left field with the bases juiced to end the inning.

6) The Yankees stole five bases, their most since Sept. 5, 2013 when they stole six. Wade stole both second and third before LeMahieu drove him in during the third inning.
