Four takeaways from Sunday's game...
1) The Yankee pitching staff struggled early on Sunday, as four pitchers combined to give up six runs over the first five innings. Chad Green was effective as the opener, but Montgomery's 2019 debut was a battle, as the left-hander allowed three runs on four hits over two innings. Dellin Betances also made his first appearance of the season and he was excellent, striking out both batters he faced. But Betances gave way to Nestor Cortes Jr., who allowed a three-run homer to Randal Grichuk, the outfielder's second home run of the game.
2) As has been the case so often this season, the Yankees did not wait around to start launching home runs, as Aaron Judge got them on the board with a solo shot in the first inning. Judge took a fastball from former Met Wilmer Font and powered it the other way over the wall in right field. It gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead and was Judge's 23rd home run of the season.
3) After Montgomery allowed two runs in the second, the Yankees got one back thanks to an RBI double from DJ LeMahieu. Tyler Wadegot the inning started LeMahieu just continues to hit, as he as all season, with his average sitting at .328 on the year. Didi Gregorius gave the Yankees a lead after stinging a ball past Cavan Biggio to drive in LaMahieu.
4) The Yankees had their best chance to mount a comeback in the seventh, when a throwing error by Richard Urena made it a 6-4 Blue Jays lead. Aaron Judge got hit by a pitch, putting the tying run on the bases with just one out. But Didi Gregorius struck out and Gleyber Torres grounded harmlessly to shortstop to retire the side.
