The Yankees beat the White Sox 10-3 on Sunday to split the four-game series at Guaranteed Rate Field.
5 takeaways from Sunday's game
1) Yankees backup catcher Austin Romine drove in four runs with a two-run double and a two-run single, raising his season total to 15. Romine is now a career .290 hitter with runners in scoring position in 224 at-bats in such situations.
2) Brett Gardner has been at his best this season when not having to play every day. That will not be hard to set up with Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge and newly-acquired Edwin Encarnacion set to join the club spread out over the next few days. Gardner recorded a two-run single in the Yanks' five-run third inning, an RBI groundout in the sixth inning and an RBI single in the eighth.
3) James Paxton finally turned in a solid starting effort from a member of the rotation (Chad Green's "opener" efforts aside), hurling six innings of two-run ball in which he scattered eight hits, walked one and struck out seven. Paxton has not been everything the Yanks hoped he would thus far, touting a 3.93 ERA across 55 innings, however his potential is still there. If the Yanks are to hold off Tampa and Boston in the AL East, the lefty will have to step up his game through the summer.
4) Cameron Maybin homered for the second straight game and doesn't want to make the Yankees' decision in a crowded outfield an easy one. Maybin is now hitting .279 in 37 games (104 at-bats) with the Yankees since arriving in a late April trade.
5) To continue the theme of "players likely relegated to more time on the bench in the coming days," Gio Urshela stroked a double and a single, scored two runs and drove in another. Urshela has come back to earth a bit, but he appears to be a player that can acclimate to any role change thrown his way.
