Six things to know from Saturday's second game

1. Michael King got the start for the Yankees, and his outing got off to a shaky start. After allowing a leadoff double, King walked the bases loaded and then walked in a run as he gave his third straight free pass to Yoshi Tsutsugo, giving the Rays a 1-0 lead. To King’s credit, though, he bounced back in the second inning, striking out the side.

King pitched into the fourth for the Yankees, walking the last two batters he faced. Luis Avilan then walked a batter before Austin Meadows blooped a two-run single into right field, giving the Rays a 3-1 lead.

The righty was charged with three earned runs on three hits in 3.2 innings, striking out four but walking five.

2. Luke Voit tied the game up in the top of the fourth. With runners on first and third, Voit grounded a single into center field. Gleyber Torres was thrown out at third base, but Giancarlo Stanton came in to score the Bombers’ first run of the game.

Stanton later left the game with a tight left hamstring.

3. The Rays went with a seven-inning bullpen game for the second game of the doubleheader. Opener Ryan Thompson gave the Rays two shutout innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one hitter. Five Rays pitchers combined to allow just seven Yankees hits.

4. Prior to the top of the fifth inning, Aaron Boone was ejected by home plate umpire Vic Carapazza. Hitting coach Marcus Thames was thrown out of the game first, and Boone seemed to take exception to it. The ejection was Boone’s 10^th as Yankees skipper, and his first since last September.

5. Right-hander Albert Abreu made his major league debut in the bottom of the fifth inning. Abreu allowed a leadoff single to Ji-Man Choi and then hit Joey Wendle to give the Rays runners at first and second. Abreu’s fastball was in the high-90s, as he struck out Willy Adames on a 97 MPH heater, but his command was lacking. After loading the bases with a walk, Abreu gave up a sharp grounder to third that Gio Urshela couldn’t handle, stretching the Rays’ lead to 5-1.

Abreu's debut was inconsistent, as he allowed two earned runs on three hits in 1.1 innings. Abreu struck out two and walked two.

6. In the top of the seventh, the Yankees refused to go down without a fight. With two on and two out, D.J. LeMahieu notched a two-run single, making it a 5-3 game and bringing Aaron Judge to the plate as the possible tying run. Judge flew out to the warning track to end the game.

What’s next

The Yankees and Rays finish out their four-game set with a 1:10 p.m. matchup on Sunday. James Paxton will look to rebound from a shaky start to his season against Rays righty Charlie Morton.
