The Yankees bullpen imploded to spoil a potential series sweep as New York fell, 10-9, to the Blue Jays on Sunday.

- After having his start pushed back due to landing and coming off the COVID IL this week, Luis Severino took the mound for the Yankees. The long rest showed its effects in the first inning after Sevy gave up a two-run bullet to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. that cleared the left field wall.

Severino would settle down, getting through the vaunted Blue Jays lineup without much trouble until the fifth inning when he let George Springer take the first pitch over the center field wall to lead off the inning.

- Gleyber Torres continued his bounce-back season with another big day in Toronto. After the Yankees were down 2-0, he got the Bombers on the board with a two-out solo home run to dead center. Josh Donaldson would give the Yankees the lead with a two-run blast in the third, and did a defiant bat flip for good measure against his former team.

- The fifth inning is where the Yankees would break the game open. After a Joey Gallo walk and DJ LeMahieu bunt single, Aaron Judge doubled in Gallo to extend the lead to 4-2. Torres would hit a two-out double to drive in two more runs and give the Yankees a 6-2 lead.

- Kyle Higashioka and Marwin Gonzalez hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth to erase Springer’s home run and give the Yankees a commanding 8-3 lead. This was Higgy’s fourth home run this season, all coming in his last seven games. This was Gonzalez’s first home run of the season.

- Severino would pitch into the sixth inning but would get into trouble. After giving up a single to Guerrero and a walk to Alejandro Kirk to lead off the inning, Aaron Boone pulled his starter to bring in Miguel Castro.

Castro would get Teoscar Hernandez to ground into a force at third before striking out Santiago Espinal. After walking a batter, Castro gave up a grand slam to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. A double later, and Boone finally took out Castro and had Wandy Peralta come in to face Springer. The reliever would get Springer to pop out to LeMahieu in foul territory, after a great adjustment, to end the inning but the Yankees’ lead now sat at just 8-7.

Severino, considering what he dealt with earlier in the week, pitched well enough but was let down by the bullpen. His final line read: 5+ IP, 3 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 9 Ks on 102 pitches.

-In the seventh, the Blue Jays took the lead after Hernandez hit a three-run shot off of Peralta. Ron Marinaccio finished the inning to keep the deficit at 10-8. Marinaccio would also pitch a clean eighth to give the Yankees a chance in the ninth.

The bullpen pitched a combined three innings, gave up four hits and five earned runs.

- Anthony Rizzo, who had the day off, launched a pinch-hit home run to get the Yanks within 10-9 in the eighth. This was the team's fifth home run of the game.

In the ninth, Donaldson, Torres -- with a Giancarlo Stanton walk sandwiched in between -- went down, but Aaron Hicks lofted a single to keep the inning going. Rizzo grounded out to end the game and give Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano a five-out save.
