The Yankees remain an aggressive suitor for Baltimore shortstop Manny Machado, but their unwillingness to offer pitching prospect Justus Sheffield could leave them behind the Dodgers and Phillies, according to major league sources. The Brewers are also involved, but are less aggressive than the other three teams. Arizona is said to be out for now.

The Orioles want young pitching and, ideally, an infielder. Brandon Drury would likely be part of any Machado deal.

With or without Machado, the Yankees could soon pivot to a pursuit of Detroit pitcher Michael Fulmer. So far, contact between the Tigers and Yankees has been minimal, according to sources. That may be because Brian Cashman is holding out hope of acquiring Jacob deGrom. Once he realizes how unlikely the Mets are to send deGrom to the Bronx, he could move quickly on Fulmer.

Detroit is more than willing to move Fulmer, and has interest from approximately five teams, including the Yankees, Braves and Dodgers. The Padres have also checked in.

Because Fulmer is inexpensive and under control for four years, the Tigers are looking for a huge return, similar to what Chicago received from Boston for Chris Sale. All things being equal, Detroit would prefer position players to pitchers. Teams who have spoken with the Yankees say that the team is willing to move Miguel Andujar for a top pitcher.

Could Machado and Fulmer end up with the Yankees? A lot has to happen before we call that likely, but Cashman has the pieces and desire to add a frontline starting pitcher and Machado.
