Clay Holmes blew another save but the Yankees, led by Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s two home runs, held on to a 7-6 win over the Phillies in 12 innings on Tuesday night.

The Yankees closer, hours after the team failed to trade for another high-leverage reliever at the deadline, blew his seventh save of the season. Holmes overcame soft infield hits and walks to get two outs with runners in scoring position, but the right-hander bounced a pitch that allowed the runner on third to score, tying the game at 5-5 and eventually sending the game to extras where the Yanks got some timely hitting and enough pitching to end the marathon.

Here are the takeaways...

-Chisholm was the story of this game. After launching two home runs on Monday, he'd have an encore on Tuesday, launching two more blasts and accounting for all five Yankees runs.

While the first came via a fielder's choice in the first, his solo shot in the sixth cut Phillies' lead to 4-2. He then came up with one out and Juan Soto and Aaron Judge on base, the recently-acquired infielder took Matt Strahm deep 362 feet just inside the right-field foul pole to put the Yankees on top, 5-4, in the seventh.

Chisholm is the first player since Trevor Story in 2016 to hit four home runs in his first three games with a team. He also made some dazzling defensive plays at third base, just his second start of his professional career at the hot corner.

His third hit came in the 12th inning, a bloop single to left field to advance the runner to third. That runner would eventually score the winning run.

Chisholm finished 3-for-6. with five RBI.

-Thank goodness for Chisholm because the Yankees offense could not get the big hit. In the first, they loaded the bases with no outs but Austin Wells struck out before Chisholm grounded into a fielder's choice to score the game's first run. Gleyber Torres would strike out to end the threat.

After that, Phillies starter Aaron Nola hunkered down and didn't allow another run to score but the Yankees still had chances.

Wells, in particular, had his chances. Aside from the first inning, he had Soto and Judge on base with no outs in the seventh and struck out swinging. He was bailed out by Chisholm's home run. In the 11th with runners on the corners and two outs, Wells struck out swinging. The young catcher did not have a good day, and finished 0-for-6 with three strikeouts.

The Yankees as a whole were 2-for-10 with RISP and left nine runners on base.

-Anthony Volpe (2-for-5 with a double) was the only Yankees aside from Chisholm and Judge (3-for-4, two walks) to have a multi-hit game. The shortstop is now 10-for-33 in his last seven games.

Alex Verdugo went 1-for-4 with a double a walk and a sac fly in the 11th inning hitting out of the leadoff spot and now has a five-game hitting streak.

-Before the game, Gerrit Cole was scratched from his start with "general fatigue." Manager Aaron Boone called upon rookie Will Warren to make his big league debut and the young right-hander was solid.

After an Alec Bohm RBI double in the first and an Austin Hays three-run shot in the second, the 25-year-old settled down. He would allow just one more hit after the home run, getting out five batters in a row, including three via strikeout.

Warren would pitch into the sixth but was done after 5.1 innings (97 pitches/60 strikes), allowing the four runs on four hits, two walks, one HBP and striking out six.

-In relief of Warren, the Yankees bullpen was great. The combination of Jake Cousins (0.2 IP), Tommy Kahnle (1 IP), and Luke Weaver (1 IP) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings without giving up a hit or walk. After Holmes' blown save, newly-acquired reliever Mark Leiter Jr. -- traded from Chicago hours before the game, pitched out of trouble in the 10th to keep the score tied at 5-5.

Michael Tonkin would blow his chance at a save in the 11th after the Yankees took the lead, but would keep the Phillies off the board in the 12th to pick up the win.

A total of seven pitchers were used in Tuesday's win.
