Yankees takeaways from 4-2 win over Mets, including Aaron Judge's big night

Frankie Montas had his best outing as a Yankee

The Yankees completed a two game sweep of the Mets on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.

Here are the takeaways...

- Frankie Montas worked himself in and out of trouble in his first two innings of work. During a 27-pitch first inning, Montas induced a massive double play with the Mets threatening and Gleyber Torres made a quick turn to end the frame. Montas also got another inning-ending double play in the top of the second. The right-hander put together his strongest start as a Yankee.

His final line was 5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K. The second run should not have happened as Torres made a blunder when Pete Alonso tripped over third base and instead of throwing him out at home, he attempted to tag Jeff McNeil at second which did not pan out.

Aaron Judge did it again. Judge broke open the scoring with his 48th homer of the year after the Yankees were hitless through their first three innings. Judge also extended the Yankee lead in the bottom of the seventh when he lined a two-out RBI single to left-center giving the Yanks a 4-2 lead. Judge seems to be out of his very small "funk" as he put together a tremendous offensive performance.

- Clarke Schmidt was given the keys to pull off a heavy task. Schmidt was called on in the bottom of the sixth to get the final batter of the inning and apparently finish the entire game. Schmidt did exactly what the Yanks asked -- for the most part, cruising through the Mets lineup until the very final strike which he just could not get.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth and with a 4-2 lead, Tyler Naquin ended up working a walk, then Brandon Nimmo tapped an infield single to the right side, and finally Starling Marte worked a walk loading the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, forcing Aaron Boone to pull Schmidt from the game. He called on Wandy Peralta to get the final out against Francisco Lindor and he did, as Lindor flew out.

- Andrew Benintendi gave the Yankees exactly what they needed again. Benintendi ripped an RBI single to left field giving the Bombers the lead right back in the seventh after the Mets tied it. The Yankees outfielder was 2-for-4 on the night and has been heating up in a big way.

What's Next?

The Yankees will get an off day on Wednesday and head out west to face the Athletics in Oakland on Thursday. Jameson Taillon will take the mound against James Kaprielian.
