There's still so much uncertainty about when the world of sports, or even the world in general, will get back to a state of normalcy.
But despite that uncertainty, Yankees manager Aaron Boone remains optimistic about playing a 2020 baseball season.
Boone was a guest on the Big Time Baseball Podcast with Jon Heyman and Tony Gwynn Jr., speaking about a number of topics, from his own playing days to how his current coaching staff is keeping tabs on players.
The Yankees' skipper says he remains optimistic that some form of a 2020 MLB season will be played.
"I absolutely feel hopeful that we're going to have a season," said Boone. "I've tried, even though it's hard because you kind of end up speculating every day, like whatever little bit of information that comes in, 'Well I could see us starting on this date.' It's usually a futile effort because you don't really have any answers and nobody really does. You try to remain hopeful and remain optimistic.
"If and when that time comes, as best we can, go out there and be prepared to go win a championship. That will be our mindset and that will be our focus. I'm confident that when we do get that call that our guys will be ready to go perform in whatever way, shape or form that is."
As for what a possible spring training would look like in his mind, Boone said it would depend on what kind of roster restrictions MLB would put in place to start the year.
In the meantime, Boone and the rest of the Yankees' staff has been keeping tabs on players as well as they can, checking in via text or even via FaceTime in some cases. He also said that about eight-to-10 players have remained in the Tampa area, along with some coaches and staff members, to have casual workouts whenever possible around the spring training facility.
As Boone has said before, he remains at home in Connecticut, meeting up with his new ace Gerrit Cole for the occasional catch.
"Pretty much we're hunkered down. I do have to go to the grocery store today. We're picking our days between my wife and I to do that, but for the most part we've been kind of hunkered down and trying to stay in as much as possible," said Boone. "Kids haven't left.
"I have gone, because Gerrit lives kind of close to me here in Connecticut, so I have gotten out and played catch with him a couple times, and yes my hand is still recovering from our last time. He's got pretty good stuff."
