Yankees’ internal, external options to replace Jazz Chisholm Jr.

Chisholm will likely land on IL with a UCL injury

With Jazz Chisholm Jr. likely to land on the injured list this week, the Yankees need to figure out how to potentially navigate the rest of the regular season and postseason without their prized trade deadline acquisition.

Chisholm’s elbow injury is concerning in that the Yanks don’t yet know the severity, which will determine how long he’ll be out.

Now that the trade deadline is behind them, the Yankees will need to figure out how to fill the hole Chisholm is leaving behind -- whether internally or externally. Here are some options...

Plug-and-play with active roster members

This plan really only works if Chisholm misses the minimum amount of time while on the IL. In this scenario, the Yanks can roll with Oswaldo Cabrera -- who started at third base on Tuesday -- and wait until Jon Berti returns from his injury to replicate what they did earlier this season when DJ LeMahieu was on the shelf.

Cabrera has had spurts this season, but he’s been great over his last seven games, hitting to a .294 average with two home runs and four RBI.

Berti, on the other hand, has been out since late May and in limited playing time this season (17 games), he slashed .273/.322/.327 with a home run, six RBI and four stolen bases. Berti is currently hitting/fielding in Tampa and could play in rehab games next week.

Call up a prospect

In the short term, the Yankees will need to bring someone up to replace Chisholm once he inevitably hits the IL. New York will use the spot to have Will Warren pitch Wednesday’s series finale against the White Sox, but will have to bring in another position player afterward.

Two infielders already on the 40-man roster are Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas, who are viable options.

Peraza, 24, has been up with the team before. But whenever he’s with the big league club he's had a hard time finding his rhythm at the plate. While he hasn’t played with New York this season, he is starting to break out in Triple-A after an injury-riddled start.

Over his last seven games, Peraza is hitting .320 with six doubles, seven home runs, 19 RBI and a 1.094 OPS. He’s also stolen seven bases in 10 attempts.

Vivas, 23, was called up in early July but never saw game action before being optioned back to Triple-A. They could give the lefty another shot -- and some actual playing time -- and see if he can provide a spark after a so-so first year with Scranton Wilkes-Barre. In 59 games there, Vivas is slashing .237/.376/.367 with five home runs and 28 RBI to go along with 14 stolen bases in 19 attempts.

After the trade deadline, playoff-bound teams are going to start to get their rosters ready for the postseason and that may mean DFA’ing some players.

The Dodgers DFA’d infielder Amed Rosario, a player the Yankees tried to sign this past offseason and inquired about at the trade deadline, after the return of Mookie Betts and with Max Muncy on the cusp of a return.

If Rosario falls to the Bombers, the 28-year-old would be a perfect fit. He can play all over the infield and is a solid bat with speed.

In 81 games this season, he’s hitting .305 with a .331 OBP and 10 stolen bases in 15 chances.

The Yanks would have to make room on the 40-man roster for Rosario, but if Chisholm’s injury warrants a 60-day IL stint, which would mean him missing the rest of the season, then the veteran infielder can slot in.
