Ahead of the trade deadline, the Yankees had "checked in" on Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Starling Marte, reports Jon Heyman -- with SNY's Andy Martino adding that a league source said the team was "open" to acquiring an outfielder.

Meanwhile, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that while the Yanks had expressed interest in Marte, New York is "reluctant" to add payroll for 2020, which he says complicated their pursuits of Marte and pitching help.

Marte was traded to the Miami Marlins on Monday afternoon.

With Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring) and Aaron Judge (calf) on the IL and not close to returning, New York could use outfield help.

Marte, 31, is under contract for $11.5 million this season and is owed $12.5 million in 2021 -- though his option for 2021 could be bought out for $2 million.

According to Heyman, New York has also been in touch with the Milwaukee Brewers about closer Josh Hader, but Heyman reported there was no traction yet on a potential trade for Hader as of Sunday night.

The Yanks had checked in on Mike Clevinger, who was dealt to the Padres on Monday morning. SNY's Andy Martino reported earlier this month that they had been in touch with the Indians about Clevinger.

The Yanks, who are without Luis Severino for the season due to Tommy John surgery and James Paxton at the moment due to a forearm issue, are in dire need of a true No. 2 starter to slot in behind Gerrit Cole.
