The first ever MiLB Awards Show took place on Monday night, and one of the Yankees’ top prospects took home one of the top honors.
Right-handed pitcher Drew Thorpe, currently ranked as the organization’s No. 5 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline, was named Minor League Pitching Prospect of the Year, edging out Cade Horton (Cubs) and Robby Snelling (Padres).
Thorpe, a second-round draft pick of the Yankees in 2022, pitched 18 games with High-A Hudson Valley this season before getting a five-game stint with Double-A Somerset. And while he was terrific with Hudson Valley (2.81 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, .215 opponent average), he was even better with the Patriots, pitching to a 1.48 ERA to go along with a 0.66 WHIP and a .144 opponent's batting average.
A shoulder injury ended his season early, as he made his final start on Sept. 6, but the injury is considered by the organization to be minor.
The 6-foot-4, 212-pound Cal Poly product is ranked as the Yankees' No. 2 pitching prospect by MLB Pipeline, just behind fellow righty Chase Hampton, and the outlet currently projects his MLB ETA to be 2025.
