Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed that reliever Chad Green will undergo Tommy John surgery, ending his season.
Boone told reporters prior to the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox that the right hander will have the procedure done. The recovery time for this surgery is about one year.
This is the second Yankees pitcher to have to undergo this procedure after Luis Gil was injured during his latest minor league start.
Saturday, the Yankees placed Green on the 15-day IL with a strained right elbow
Green left Thursday's outing against the Baltimore Orioles with an apparent injury. A day later, Boone told reporters that Green suffered a "significant injury."
Ron Marinnacio was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre to replace Green on the roster.
In 14 appearances this season, the 30-year-old reliever is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 15 IP. Opposing batters are hitting just .241 against him this season, as he's allowed only five earned runs on 13 hits, including one homer, to go along with 16 strikeouts.
Green has been a consistent reliever for the Yankees over his seven seasons in the big leagues, pitching to a 3.17 ERA through 272 games. He holds a 33-22 record, and has made 24 starts, including 15 during the 2019 season.
