Yankees manager Aaron Boone has once again seen his depth holding it down while key cogs in their postseason run machine continue to rehab their way back.

That includes Gio Urshela (hamstring), who suffered a setback in his recovery while fielding ground balls. Boone gave the latest update on the hot corner specialist on Wednesday, saying he should be back doing baseball activities soon.

"Gio’s had a couple down days," Boone told reporters ahead of the Yankees' game against the Royals. "He had a PRP [shot] so I think today he starts ramping up baseball activities again. From yesterday and today, I don’t have a report on him other than I knew he had two days down of a lot of activity.”

As for some optimistic injury news, there is a chance that a squadron of pitchers returns in the form of Gerrit Cole, Jordan Montgomery, and wait for it, Luis Severino by next week. The first two are closer than the last, but Boone can't help but be excited about what's coming.

"The guys that obviously we’re missing right now are large pieces and you can start to dream a little about getting really impactful players back for us and hopefully to fortify us and set us up for the stretch run,” he said. “Hopefully those guys continue to progress and are part of the mix in short order here.”

Boone added that Cole and Montgomery will have to prove they're 100 percent healthy during this road trip if they wish to get back in the rotation.

"They’re going to hopefully join us on this trip, get a bullpen in and just evaluate and see where they’re at physically and in their recovery and then make a call," Boone explained.

In the meantime, the Yankees have relied on stellar spot starts from Luis Gil and openers like Nestor Cortes Jr. to fill the voids left by the starters.

But, as the Yanks do make a push toward the Wild Card position here in the homestretch of the season, getting not just Cole and Montgomery but also Severino back could be just the jolt the team needs in the pitching department to complete that run.

With others like Gleyber Torres and Anthony Rizzo also down, though, New York will hope everyone can return healthy as quickly as possible because the season is only getting shorter by the game.

As the current standings look now, the Red Sox are in the second Wild Card position with the A's winning their last five games to move into the driver's seat in the first Wild Card spot. The Yanks now sit two games behind the Sox and seven behind the Rays in the AL East.
