Aaron Boone is giving Aaron Judge the day off on Wednesday during the Yankees' matchup with the Los Angeles Angels, he said during his pregame news conference.

"Just a day, one that I feel like he really needs," Boone said. "In this stretch where obviously he's been one of the ones that's played a ton, and some really long games ... he needed one today."

Judge has arguably been the best Yankee on the field this season, making some stellar plays in the outfield and slashing .285/.382/.522 at the plate to go with 18 home runs.

So with the Yankees still stumbling three months into the season and sitting fourth in the AL East, Boone said there was definitely some temptation to keep him in the lineup.

"Oh yeah, today's a very hard one with all we're going through as a club and obviously who he is to our team," Boone said on keeping him out. "But, you know, I also have to at times keep the big picture in mind -- especially with him in trying to make sure that we get him posting as much as possible, which he's done a ton this year. But today was the day I was pretty convicted that he needed to be down."

Boone also clarified that even though Judge is being held out Wednesday, there aren't any glaring injury issues for the slugger at the moment.

"I think he gets beat up a little bit in the lower half, especially in this stretch of games where we're in right now -- 13 in a row -- and it's been hot. We've played some three and a half plus hour games, some day games after night games, obviously he's played center field, he's been on the bases a lot. So I just think it's he's just overall a little bit beat up. Nothing that I'm concerned with as far as anything that I think is gonna keep him out of the lineup, but more trying to get out ahead of preventing something from happening just because of the stretch we're in."
